On-Site MOT Steam Cleaning

MOT Steam Cleaning for HGVs & Commercial Vehicles

Pre-MOT Vehicle Cleaning

What Is MOT Steam Cleaning?

MOT steam cleaning is a thorough hot-water clean carried out before a vehicle’s annual test or inspection. It focuses on areas where oil, grease, traffic film and road dirt can build up, including the engine area, chassis and undercarriage.

For HGV operators, pre-MOT cleaning makes these areas cleaner and easier to inspect. It can also be useful before servicing or workshop work where clear access to components is needed.

Mobile Fleetwash provides nationwide on-site pre-MOT steam cleaning for HGVs, trucks, trailers and commercial vehicles, helping remove built-up grease, oil and road grime ahead of inspection.

Preparing for Annual Inspection

Why Clean an HGV Before Its Annual Test?

Most HGVs in Great Britain need an MOT, also known as an annual test, each year. Tests are carried out by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) at authorised testing facilities or DVSA test stations.

Pre-MOT steam cleaning is not itself a legal requirement for every HGV. Operators use it to remove accumulated grease, oil, road dirt and other deposits before the vehicle is presented for inspection.

A cleaner engine, chassis and underside gives workshop teams and inspectors a clearer view of the vehicle and can make preparation for the annual test easier.

MOT steam cleaning can be booked as a one-off service ahead of an inspection or arranged alongside your wider vehicle cleaning schedule.

Engine, Chassis & Undercarriage Steam Cleaning

Pre-MOT cleaning concentrates on the areas that need a deeper clean than a standard exterior vehicle wash. Depending on the vehicle and your requirements, cleaning can include:

  • Engine and engine-bay areas
  • Chassis and visible chassis components
  • Undercarriage and underside areas
  • Axles and surrounding areas
  • Built-up oil, grease and road contamination
  • Other accessible areas agreed before the clean

Hot water and high-pressure cleaning equipment are used to break down stubborn deposits and wash away accumulated dirt.

Mobile Fleetwash has specialised mobile cleaning units that can carry out pre-MOT steam cleaning at customer depots, workshops and other suitable operating sites.

Our units are equipped to carry out hot-water cleaning on location. This can make it easier to coordinate the clean with workshop preparation, maintenance schedules and vehicle availability.

Wastewater & Clean-Up

Waste Water Compliance

Managing Wash Water After Steam Cleaning

MOT steam cleaning can produce wash water containing road dirt, oils, grease and cleaning residues. This needs to be considered when deciding where the work will take place.

Where suitable drainage is unavailable, Mobile Fleetwash can provide wastewater containment. Wash water can be captured during cleaning and reclaimed into onboard tanks for removal and approved disposal where required.

Our team also carries out post-wash clean-up of the working area once the vehicle cleaning has been completed.

This allows pre-MOT steam cleaning to be considered at sites where drainage or runoff needs additional control.

Pre-MOT HGV Cleaning FAQs

Is steam cleaning legally required before an HGV MOT?

DVSA requires HGVs and trailers to be clean enough for the relevant components to be inspected during the annual test. However, there is no requirement stating that every vehicle must specifically be steam cleaned. Pre-MOT steam cleaning helps remove built-up oil, grease and road dirt from areas such as the chassis, engine area and undercarriage, making them cleaner and easier to inspect.

Pre-MOT cleaning commonly focuses on the engine area, chassis and undercarriage, along with other accessible areas where grease, oil and road dirt have accumulated. The exact cleaning specification can be agreed before the visit.

The timing should leave enough time for the vehicle to be prepared appropriately before testing. DVSA specifically advises that steam cleaning a vehicle’s brake system immediately before a brake test can reduce brake performance, so this needs to be taken into account when scheduling the work.
